Event Format and Schedule
Gift the Code is a weekend-long event. The heart of the event is to do some good, necessary work to support our local communities, and it’s also a genuinely good time. People meet each other and make friends, there are amazing speakers and judges, the food is divine – it’s not unlike a brainy, entertaining party that’s catered and comfy. Here’s what you can expect this year.
All Gift the Code teams will have five minutes to present their solutions to a group of judges in a science-fair style set-up on Sunday afternoon. The expo judges will use predetermined judging criteria to determine the top solution in each charity league. The top team from each charity league will then get the chance to present their brilliant solution and shine bright in front of the entire hackathon audience.
Judges’ scores will be based on five components. Here’s a breakdown:
How will the solution help the charity impact lives?
How unique is the solution’s concept?
How effective is the technical approach and implementation?
How is the overall experience for a person using the solution?
Did the presenters provide a convincing argument for the solution?
Friday, November 16
The event kicks off on Friday evening. We’ll have dinner together and get to know one another a little. After that, everyone will break into teams and choose a charity to work with. The night is all about getting oriented and figuring out what we’ll be doing over the weekend.

Saturday, November 17
Saturday is spent learning more about the unique challenges each charity is facing, determining what needs to happen to help to solve it and then working out how to go about doing just that.
The rest of the hackathon is spent working together on the problem! It’s busy, it’s fast-paced, it’s energetic – but there are lots of breaks, lots of spots to chill out and plenty of scrumptious snacks to get you through the crunch.
Sunday, November 18
The whole thing ends with a big celebration where everyone can see how much they’ve all accomplished and bask in the sweet glow of a weekend well spent.
