Preparing for Gift the Code 2018

11-12-18

In just a few short weeks, over 100 innovators will gather high up in the sky at the Globe and Mail Centre to pursue an even loftier goal: #UseDigitalForGood and build tech solutions for six charities. This year, an incredibly diverse crowd of social good activists has registered to donate their time and talent to make the world a better place. There are developers, looking to literally gift the code, and data scientists, who will analyze and advertise the best way to leverage the power of data. Let’s not forgot our designers, who will take complex processes and make them completely processable, or the business strategists who will gift their time and their minds! We're incredibly excited to host you all – and to make sure everyone has the best possible experience, we’ve gathered some information to help prep you for the big weekend.

Build Your Profile and Team

Sign in to your account on the Hackworks platform! You'll have the option to edit your profile, add skillsets, find team members and invite other participants to join your team. You can also use the match-making tool to see who else is participating in Gift the Code and what skills they bring. You can read their bios and view their social media accounts to learn more about them. If they match what you’re looking for, invite them to build a solution together.

Slack

Slack is an instant messaging platform that we’ll be using throughout the weekend for all communications. You’ll be able to connect with mentors and charity representatives, chat as a team and ask questions to event organizers. If you haven’t received an email invitation to join the Gift the Code Slack channel yet, send us an email and we’ll get you set up.

The Venue

Gift the Code is taking place at The Globe and Mail Centre at 351 King Street East. The venue features a breathtaking view of Toronto that can be enjoyed from both a large area on the 17th floor, where teams will set up for the weekend, as well as from two large rooms on the 16th floor, where you’ll find the official lounge complete with back massages and energizing games. Throughout the weekend, we'll make sure that you have an endless supply of caffeine and enough food to sustain you - day and night. For all of you night owls who prefer to hack past bedtime, the venue will be open all night.

Schedule

Doors open at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 16 for all participants to check in. We’ll be serving dinner and helping match up anyone still looking for a team. Once each participant has joined a team and registered, they’ll be able to choose their charity on hackworks.com. Heads up: we'll be limiting the number of teams working with each charity to ensure that all charities have a good number of teams tackling their challenges. At 7:30, we’ll officially kick off the event by revealing each of the charities’ challenges, as well as presenting an overview of the entire weekend. At 9 p.m., teams will have chosen their charity and will receive a briefing on their challenges from the charity representatives on-site. At 1 p.m. on Sunday, the expo will begin. Each team will have the opportunity to pitch their solution to a group of judges who will score each team and determine the top-scoring solution for each charity. Charity representatives will also be evaluating each solution to determine which one has the most potential from their point of view. Once the judges’ scores are tallied, the teams with the top-scoring solutions will go on stage and present to everyone. After that, celebrations! (Just a reminder, there are no prizes for top scores. For Gift the Code, we believe the charities are the winners!)

What to Bring

There'll be plenty of food and drinks available throughout the weekend and each meal will have options to accommodate most dietary restrictions. In the spirit of sustainability, we encourage you to bring a reusable water bottle and coffee mug. If you plan on staying at the venue overnight, you may want to bring a pillow, blanket, change of clothes, sleeping bag, toothbrush, deodorant and other toiletries. It’s important to note that there will be no showers available at the venue, so we do encourage you to find accommodation to maintain personal hygiene. Of course, don’t forget your laptop and charger as well as any other devices you plan to build with over the weekend! There are lots of outlets throughout the venue, and of course, free wifi. Most importantly, don’t forget your passion to #UseDigitalForGood. Get ready to have one of the best weekends of the year at Gift the Code!
